TESCO’S SEA-CHANGE ON SWORDFISH
Nearly five years after Bite-Back helped prompt Tesco to stop selling swordfish the UK’s largest food retailer has chosen to reintroduce the vulnerable fish species – sourced from the Indian Ocean - to its wet fish counters across the country.
The news comes just months after Bite-Back prompted Waitrose to stop selling swordfish in its prestige supermarkets along with the entire Morrisons network.
Now Tesco stands alone as the only major supermarket to sell swordfish in the UK.
Campaign director for Bite-Back, Graham Buckingham, said: “Tesco’s decision to put swordfish back on its fish counters is nothing short of ludicrous. Given the worldwide consensus that swordfish stocks are perilously low it shouldn’t feature in any supermarket and now it stands alone in its ignorance. Eating swordfish is neither ethical or environmentally viable. It’s not.”

Back in May 2005, Tesco’s Fresh Fish Technical Manager, David Oliver, said: “Tesco is committed to taking a responsible approach and promoting sustainable fish sourcing.”
For that reason, Bite-Back is confident that it can overturn Tesco’s decision again.
Already Bite-Back has created a new email request that can be sent directly to the fish buyer at Tesco along with its CSR department urging them to stop selling swordfish.
Graham Buckingham said: “We need all our supporters to help prompt a positive outcome that will signal to the world that its time to truly understand that the oceans are a natural resource that should be revered and respected.”
Please let Tesco know that you’re backing our request for them to no longer sell swordfish by emailing them now.
