STEIN SHOULD BE SHAMED

Rick Stein seafood booksCelebrity chef and restaurateur, Rick Stein, has outraged Bite-Back with his recent decision to ignore government guidelines and carry on selling endangered fish species in his Cornwall-based restaurants.

Stein, 61, claimed his menus options would shrink by 80 percent if he followed government and fishery guidelines and stopped selling dwindling species such as shark, skate and monkfish.

Campaign director at Bite-Back, Graham Buckingham, commented; "This is absolutely a worst case example of a high profile celebrity chef looking to maintain a wealthy business empire at any cost.

"Stein's restaurants are participating in a marine holocaust. The official guidelines for fishing certain species are there for a very good reason. His restaurants are effectively promoting the extinction of some our most valuable marine life. If we're especially unlucky, this will be during Mr Stein's lifetime."

Rick Stein seafood booksBite-Back is urging Stein's restaurants and others like it to cut back or altogether cease using some of the most threatened species in restaurants including shark, swordfish, marlin and monkfish.

Already, the marine conservation group has enjoyed breakthroughs with five supermarket chains and restaurants including Wagamama and Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant, Hakkasan.

Bite-Back is inviting supporters to send this Bite-Back email directly to Rick's people at his restaurant empire in Padstow.
