Get ready for a campaign that could change the shark fin trade in 28 countries.
Since Bite-Back first exposed the chronic loophole in European legislation that allows anyone entering Europe to bring 20kg of dried shark fins (The Times, 21 April 2015) the charity has been busy working on a new, exciting and intelligent campaign to bring that total to zero.
The No Fin To Declare campaign is set to pile pressure on the European Commission to re-evaluate the legislation and to vote to make it illegal to carry any shark fins in to any of the 28 European countries, including the UK.
It’s going to be Bite-Back’s biggest campaign yet.
Already the charity has won support from some high profile individuals and organisations. There’s also a series of multi-media stunts in the pipeline that will win new supporters and expose the current shark fin legislation as ludicrous and archaic.
And, in the coming days, Bite-Back will launch a global petition to give a voice to thousands of everyday people who are shocked and outraged at the current legislation.
Campaign director for Bite-Back, Graham Buckingham, said: “We know that shark fins entering Europe through this route are making their way via the black market to the restaurant trade. The current legislation is making it cheap and easy for restaurants to get hold of fins. For the survival of sharks, it has to end. Cutting off this supply route will be a major breakthrough for shark conservation across the whole of Europe.”
