DOWN IN CHINATOWN

Against a backdrop of steadfast ignorance, denial and outdated traditions in London's Chinatown, three Chinese restaurants have been awarded Bite-Back stickers for choosing not to sell shark fin soup.

It's an outcome that provides Team Bite-Back and its supporters with significant hope that more restaurants can be inspired to drop the abhorrent dish from menus. At the same time, it's predicted that the stickers will act as 'beacons' to restaurant-goers wishing to make an ethical stance in Chinatown.

Armed with a direct letter of intent and intellectual ammunition, Bite-Back's message was boosted by significant support from UK members of Sea Shepherd.

Campaign director for Bite-Back, Graham Buckingham, said: "The daily slaughter of 270,000 sharks is massively fuelled by the 'out-of-control demand' for shark fin soup. We have to get the situation back under control and that means engaging with restaurant-goers and owners to prompt a halt trade in shark fin."

Already Bite-Back and Sea Shepherd are planning a series of high impact, peaceful protests in Chinatown, designed to heightened awareness of the situation and encourage restaurant-goers to eat elsewhere.

Bite-Back plans for a victory on home soil to inspire the rest of the developed world to follow its lead and drop shark fin soup for good.

Graham Buckingham said: "The advent of shark fin soup has stolen the seas from divers; we're stealing it back."
