Bite-Back Supermarket Campaign
Make a difference now by sending your own personalised protest to Morrisons:
As a supporter of Bite-Back, the shark and marine conservation charity, I wanted to share my utter disappointment that, after a five year hiatus, Morrisons has chosen to reintroduce swordfish to its fish counters. As a result, Morrisons stands alone with Sainsbury’s and Tesco as the only supermarkets in the UK to sell swordfish — a species widely regarded as being over-fished.
It’s time for Morrisons to put conservation before commerce and drop swordfish along with other species known to be at threat from over-fishing including monkfish and skates/rays plus non-certified tropical prawns. Around the world stocks of these fish-counter mainstays are widely regarded by experts as being severely depleted or reliant on farming measures that have a significant negative impact on the marine environment.
Right now, misinformation about the status of many fish species coupled with an ongoing ignorance about the fishing methods used is impeding vital action needed to protect the oceans from critical issues including over-fishing, by-catch and marine habitat destruction.
For that reason, I’m inviting you to work with Bite-Back to develop a clear and no-nonsense approach to selling fish — an approach that will leave your customers in no doubt as to the provenance of the fish you sell, their sustainability and the impact on the environment caused by the fishing method deployed.
To me, and thousands of Bite-Back supporters, there’s a clear and distinct correlation between over-consumption and over-fishing. It is a link that can be broken by retailers like Morrisons. So rather than endorsing the certain extinction of these species, I want Morrisons to take a stand in favour of the marine environment.
Please urgently halt the sale of swordfish, monkfish, skate/rays now and choose to only sell prawns with a certified ethical label.
I look forward to you working with Bite-Back and a future that demonstrates greater respect for the marine environment.
Your customers will thank you for it.
Yours sincerely
