Supermarket Campaign

Make a difference now by sending your own personalised protest to Morrisons:
As a supporter of Bite-Back, the shark and marine conservation organisation, I wanted to congratulate Morrisons on the progress it has made by choosing to no longer sell threatened fish species including swordfish.
However I am committed that Morrisons takes urgent action to set a new agenda for retailer-led marine conservation.
Right now misinformation about the status of many fish species coupled with an ongoing ignorance about the fishing methods used is impeding vital action needed to protect the oceans from critical issues including over-fishing, by-catch and marine habitat destruction.
That’s why I’m inviting you to work with Bite-Back to develop a clear and no-nonsense approach to selling fish... an approach that will leave your customers in no doubt as to the provenance of the fish you sell, their sustainability and the impact on the environment caused by the fishing method deployed.
Fish counter mainstays including monkfish, skate/rays, prawns, cod, plaice and haddock are widely regarded by experts as being severely overfished in most parts of the world or rely on farming measures that have a significant negative impact on the marine environment. Considering this evidence it is alarming to know that these same species make up 80% of all fish consumed in the UK – mostly purchased through supermarkets.
To me, and thousands of Bite-Back supporters, this points to a clear and distinct correlation between over-consumption and over-fishing. It is a link that can be broken by ethically conscious retailers.
So rather than continuing to endorse the certain extinction of these species, I want Morrisons to take a stand in favour of the marine environment.
The result could signal a brand new agenda for preserving marine wildlife and conserving the only truly wild item to appear in your stores.
In the meantime, I urge Morrisons to swiftly halt the sale of monkfish, skate/rays and choose to only sell prawns with a certified ethical label.
I look forward to you working with Bite-Back and a future that demonstrates greater respect for the marine environment.
Your customers will thank you for it.
Yours sincerely
